JM3 Performing California Dreamin'

If you've followed my blog you know I'm a John Mayer fan. Click on the John Mayer tag, and you'll find a series of posts chronicling my love for this guy's music and wit (he's funny). Initially, I wasn't a fan. He broke big when I was abroad. And I was simply apathetic. It was when I heard "Who Did You Think I Was" by the John Mayer Trio (JM3) that I started paying attention.

I dig John Mayer's music, but it's when he's with the JM3 that I go batty ;) So check them out. They were on The Tonight Show and performed California Dreamin' this past Thursday. What an awesome welcome from Conan now that he's broadcasting from L.A.

Enjoy!

Travel Recap

Okay, I'm back in San Francisco. After flying down to L.A. to attend the One Splendid Evening concert and sail off on the the Mayercraft Carrier the next day and then staying behind after the cruise to spend some time in my hometown, I think I only managed to loose one thing. I have a glucose meter that is MIA, but 1) I'm pretty sure I know where I left it and 2) I've got two back-up meters.

In terms of the people, one of my roommates from last year roomed with me again. That was fun. I also ran into tons of people that I clicked with last year and ignored the ones that I didn't ;)

I think the best moment for me was waking up in Cabo San Lucas, opening the window and looking straight out on the arches of Land's End. I know, I'm supposed to say something like "being on a cruise with John Mayer!!!" Yes, that was great, but the view that morning was priceless. I'm sure even Mr. Mayer won't be mad at me for ranking a great view as the best part. However, it was a weekend of many great moments.

I only had one truly negative moment. On Tuesday after the cruise, I was on the shuttle heading back to LAX to pick up a rental car. I'd put at least two bags of stuff I'd bought in Cabo San Lucas in the overhead bin along with a box of stuff from the OSE concert. What that meant was it was going to take me a few moments pulling, twisting and tugging to get situated and get off of that bus. I turned to the woman waiting behind me and told her she could go past me if she liked. Don't you know I heard her say as she got off the bus something about how that lady was trying to "rush" her off the bus.

Um, no, you silly cow.

I was saying she could just go around me because I didn't want to hold her up. I was offended because my intention was to be nice. But when people expect to get shit from you, it usually doesn't matter what your intention is, they're going to get shit.

I did think it was funny to be in Mexico and to see things like the Hard Rock Cafe and little cantenas blasting rock n' roll. This isn't a criticism. It was my first time there. Of course, since I loved Van Halen way back when (still do), I knew about Cabo Wabo too. I didn't bother to go in though.

I understand the sort of tourist they're catering to, and that's the reason for Cabo's success. It's about traveling to a resort town and lounging in the sun. "Authentic" would not be the feeling I got from being in Cabo. But sometimes authentic 1) is overrated and 2) isn't want you want. Sometimes people just want to relax somewhere with the creature comforts that they're used to.

Cabo seems the perfect place for that. In fact, that's exactly what I did. I got off the ship, shopped a bit, hired a pedi-taxi take me along the main drag for more shopping and a beer (thanks Gregorio!) and that was it. Then it was back to the ship because, as usual, I was up way late and was exhausted. I slept through the afternoon until the roar of the ship's engines woke me up.

It was lots of fun, lots of music, lots of dancing and, if I can manage it, I'll be back for next year's cruise. I'll be posting all the other blogs I find on it over on The Mayercraft Chronicles. The first post courtesy of the TryJM site is up and more shall follow. However, now I want lunch.

(Just like last year, I'm making no claims to originality; I'm just compiling all the blogs I find in one spot. The goal: I'm trying to help make info easy to find.)

Mayercraft Carrier 2

Just a quick update as I've been a very silent blogger for the last few days.

I'm on the ship again. It's turning out to be as good as last year, but also different. In most ways, that difference is better. Like last year, I probably won't blog too much on it directly. However, I'll compile all the MCC2 blogs I find into one like I did last year. In fact, I'll just continue where I left off. You can check it out at this link: Mayercraft Carrier Chronicles. I've not updated yet. Wi-fi access on the ship doesn't come cheap. (However, trick to all you cruisers – write your emails, replies, messages, blogs, etc. before you log on.)

The HuffPo Strikes Again: "Hope" Is Not a Buzz Word by John Mayer

Another Huffington Post coup!

John Mayer speaks and, let me tell you, when it comes to politics he plays his hand pretty close. Outside of a some jokes exchanged about Ron Paul or Ru Paul with friends outside of a NYC hot spot last year and the inclusion of his hit single "Waiting on the World to Change" on Voices of a Grassroots Movement, which is the Obama campaign CD, John Mayer hasn't said much on the upcoming election.

However today, I woke to see an RSS link on my iGoogle page to a Huffington Post blog that John had written.

Here is is, in full:

"Hope" Is Not a Buzz Word

I was 23 years old when the nation was attacked on September 11, 2001. I can remember hearing pundits say "this changes everything" and "things will never be the same." Obviously it was a tragic and traumatic event, but that sentiment has carried on through the better part of my twenties. If you were 43 years old on that day, I would imagine it was a difficult concept to get your head around as well, but if you were a young adult just entering his or her individual life, there was an added twist; how can you process the idea of everything changing and things never being the same when you have no point of reference for what "everything" and "the same" is? I was just beginning to put my hands on the world around me, to interact and engage with it, and to actualize the dream of being an adult in a free society. To wait in line for 23 years only to have the "sorry, future canceled" sign flipped in my face was depressing, to say the least.

The social and political narrative of the last eight years, if you're a young adult, has been "you are the first generation of the second half of the rest of human existence." That's a huge psychological undertaking, and I believe it's one that will someday be diagnosed on a massive scale as having led to a kind of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. (Something has to explain away our premature obsession with 1980s nostalgia.) My generation has come to know itself as the generation that should have seen the good days, my, were they spectacular, now take off your shoes and place them on the belt.

What Barack Obama says to me is these days are good for something. Just when I'd thought my only role as an adult was to help shoulder the nation through its darkest days (known to us as "the rest of them"), Obama gives me the feeling that I could be alive to witness one of the most brilliant upturns in a country's history. Imagine that -- a young adult in this day and age being given something to someday brag to his children about having being alive to witness. What a concept.

That's why hope is a worthwhile commodity. To those who question whether hope is a tangible product worth building a campaign around, I'd say take a look at despair and how powerful that has been in reshaping how people think and live. I believe the definition of the "hope" that Barack Obama enthuses operates on the unspoken thesis that there has to be a polar opposite to the despair of 9/11. Because if we accept that there's not, the will to live becomes forever altered. To adults who will vote for him, Barack Obama represents a return to prosperity. To the youth, he represents an introduction to it.

So, John, for what it's worth, thanks for letting people know it's okay to have hope.

A Brief Vacation Wrap-Up: Fukuoka, Tokyo and at sea with John Mayer

I spent a few days in Fukuoka, Japan earlier this week and I just had a great time. Part of the reason was for a visa run which I'll chronicle later. However, let me just make it clear, yes, you can still do one day visa runs to Fukuoka. I didn't but you can.

I really like that city a lot. Because I don't live in Japan, don't know much about the culture or the language, it's still just a random experience when I end up in Japan. It's always great because the Japanese are so wonderfully courteous and friendly.

I'd left my diabetes test strips at home. I had enough for most of my trip, but because I wear an insulin pump I need to test my sugars frequently. This is particularly so now because I'm back to exercising and my glucose levels and insulin needs are changing. Also, I was in a city just walking around a lot, so that means I also needed to check more often. I use a One Touch Ultra Smart glucose monitor by Johnson & Johnson.
I decided to stick with One Touch years ago when it was just pretty clear they were a dominant player in the industry and their products were everywhere. I've bought One Touch test strips from Vladivostok, Russia to Paris, France. That sort of security in knowing that wherever you'll end up, some place will have your diabetes supplies sets my mind at ease when I travel.

It was a bit more of a chore finding them in Fukuoka, but I chanced upon Sogo Pharmacy in the Nishijin area of the city. I'd gone to Nishijin to do a run at the Donki store and decided to see if I could find a pharmacy with test strips since there are many along that road. The pharmacists at Sogo were great. They didn't have it, but they got on the phone and called another branch in the Tenjin area of the city which is where my hotel was. They had the strips there. Then one of the pharmacists went with me across the street to the bus stop, waited with me and made sure the bus driver knew which stop to let me off at.

I'm sorry but in Korea you'd get the people giggling because they were embarrassed dealing with you, a "no" with no other attempt to help you and you'd be sent on your way. There would be no one who worked a the pharmacy trying to help you find it. This low level of care is what I allude to when I talk about Korea and their desire to be a "hub". If they can't get basic customer service down, those with the money and the means are going to move to places where they will consistently get that high level of service. That level of service is here in Korea but it's on a hit and miss basis. It's by no means consistent and, unfortunately, it is usually lacking.

The usual container for my test strips on the left and the Japanese version on the right.

I made it across town and successfully bought another tube of strips. Now I could rest easy and take myself out for authentic Fukuoka style ramen. In Fukuoka stalls pop up when it gets dark. These stalls serve food and liquor. Usually they're full as they hold only about 10 or so people. I found one that had a spot for me. I sat down, ordered some ramen and an Asahi beer. Then I met these fun people. The girl particularly liked me because we had the same hair. I thought that was cute because she was lamenting that mine was real while hers was fake. What was cute was her date for the evening, sitting on my right in the picture also had an afro perm.

Earlier that day I decided to play tourist a bit. I went to the Fukuoka Tower to see the view of the coastline and the city. I also went to RoboSquare which is next to Fukuoka Tower in the TNC building. Both were pretty cool.

The tower made me a bit dizzy. I'm not one for heights, but when on vacation you've just got to suck it up. They even have couches on one level for couples to snuggle and look at the view. I also met a really nice guy there too. Fukuoka people are really friendly.

Next door at RoboSquare I had more fun. I got to pet a robotic seal and play with a robotic dog. That was too much fun for me 'cause I'm a geek. The dog has even been programmed with real life quirks. Sometimes he'll play fetch, but sometimes he won't be in the mood and will just do his own thing. I also got to talk to a Hello Kitty robot. However, she only spoke Japanese, so her reply to my US-accented "hello" I was told was she didn't understand me. Fair is fair. I was in Japan speaking English.

The entrance to the RoboSquare store.

The next day was a rainy day so I scrapped my plans to get up to the Atago Shrine and instead just bounced around the Tenjin area shopping and wandering around until it was time to get the the ferry port.

It was weird when I got there because I ran into a Russian man who just fell in love with me. I went to the restroom just to make sure I'd be set when it was time to board, and I noticed there was someone outside of the restroom. I figured maybe they were waiting for someone. So imagine my surprise when I came out and he asked me for a picture. I'm cute, but I'm not bathroom stalking cute. However, different strokes for different folks, I guess. I've noticed that some Slavic men go a little batty when I'm around. I recall one great story in Vladivostok with a Russian man as my Princess Cruise ship was getting ready to sail off to Japan. Eh, I won't complain because we know attention like that is a lot of fun. In the spirit of quid pro quo, I had a friend of the Russian bathroom stalker snap a pic of me and my enthusiastic Russian admirer. However, the picture turned out a bit too blurry to post here.

The other funny and embarrassing thing was my test strips weren't the only thing I'd forgotten to pack. I'd also forgotten my underwear. Good for me that Korea has underwear in a box. At the Express Bus Terminal at about 1:45am I went to the Family Mart and bought a box of ladies panties. It's embarrassing, but, at least, they have them.

In sorting through my photos, I realized I'd not uploaded any from the Mayercraft Carrier cruise I took a few weeks ago. Honestly, I didn't take many photos simply because I didn't see a need to. Also, I was offended to my core by people who wouldn't let Mayer just enjoy the cruise.

I didn't take well to the photo stalking. The guy had agreed to take a cruise with his fans and some of his fans, in my opinion, treated him less than humanely by sticking their cameras and themselves in his personal space. My rule is if he's performing and is on stage, game on, and snap away. However, if the guy is in the nightclub, and for the first two nights I was there shaking my groove thing on the dance floor he and his crew did show up, you leave him the hell alone and let him enjoy his time. Should you get his attention, ask if it's okay to take a picture and he says it's okay, then snap away. Of course, people don't have that level of self control, so it became a zoo when the guy was anywhere near people on the boat. I'm glad that he still had enough fun that they're planning for a second one next year.

Anyway, here are two photos I snapped during his last show. He played three shows on the three day cruise. One on the first night and two on the last day. One show was during the afternoon on the Lido Deck and the other was in the evening. Basically, that day was my day o' Mayer and it was great fun because it was also Superbowl Sunday. That's all of the Mayercraft coverage you'll get out of me. For more, hop over the the Mayercraft Carrier Chronicles where I put together all of the blog posts I could find from others on their cruise experience.

Also, that reminds me to give a hat tip to the Hotel Fukudaya in Tokyo. I had a reservation to stay there at the tail end of my vacation home/Mayercraft adventure in late February. However, due to a death in my family and me just enjoying being home, I chose to stay in the States. I canceled my reservation at the last minute just due to confusion on my part. The people at the hotel graciously waived the penalty.

It's basically a renovated home where they now put up guests to the city. I've stayed there once before back in November 2006, when, speaking of John Mayer, I flew to Tokyo to see him in concert. Honestly, for a city as expensive as Tokyo it's nice to stay in a place where you have s-p-a-c-e but is not prohibitively expensive. Check them out. They're just a few stops by bus from Shibuya station.

Okay, there is is. Weeks after or days after the fact, depending on the trip, but there it is.

Back in Miami

I'm just checking in real quick.

The Mayercraft docked in Miami today and now I'm here in Miami International Airport waiting for my flight to New York City.

The cruise was amazing! I'll upload pictures later. My 80s prom outfit was a hoot!

As I've said before, John Mayer is a good soul and an awesome musician. Now I can add amazing party host to that list!

I want to thank him and all involved for throwing a mad fun music party. I'm now a Martin Sexton fan for sure. I saw him play two shows on the cruise and during John's show he came out during the encore. I'm just glad I can say that I was one of just a few who got to experience the first Mayercraft cruise.

Yes, the man himself has set the buzz going that there will be others and, hell yes, I'll be coming back.

The folks over at TryJM have been linking the blogs that have come up on it, so check it out there. By the time I get around to updating this and my other post it will be a couple of weeks behind the curve.

ExpatJane's Report from the Mayercraft Carrier!!!

Hey everyone. I'm being an expat in a different country!!!

I'm checking in from Freeport, Bahamas where the Mayercraft Carrier cruise ship has docked for the day.

To my friends who've asked, yes, I've seen John Mayer. Yes, I've been in the same room with and in close proximity to him. Beyond that, I'm keeping it zipped and I'll report back when all is said and done.

There is a big 80s party tonight on the ship. Yes, THAT's been the inspiration for all the 80s videos.

My outfit: Pretty in Pink, overkill ;-)

Let's just say I'm having a great time and didn't get to bed until 7:30am this morning. Yes, there is a reason there is no picture with this post.

A bientôt my readers.

Repost: JohnMayer.com Blog - Under The (Impression I Can) Influence (People Around Me)

It's a great message that's well with a repost, so here it is. It also makes me feel better as I'll be rolling around my hometown of L.A. in a few weeks in my rented Mini Cooper, and I've gotta admit the last thing I was is some celeb (or anyone for that matter) taking me out because they're driving drunk.

Designate a driver, hire a driver, call a friend, hail a cab, take the bus, get on the subway...whatever you do, don't drive.

With Chad, Left, seated. (With glasses)

I'm taking to the blog today to share something with you that I feel more passionate about than I saw coming.
I want to make it short and sweet so that anybody who wants to re-print it can copy and paste without editing...

Went out to dinner Thursday night. My car. One glass of wine. Carpooled from dinner to go out to one more place. Everyone in my car. At the next spot, I do the Diet Coke with Lime thing. My favorite scotch (Lagavulin 16 year) arrives under my nose. "Can't do it," I say. Then I find out my friend has switched to Designated Driver and has a plan that involves everyone getting home safe. Cool. I love Lagavulin when the time is right. Now it's the end of the night and I'm feeling wonderfully buzzy and ready to get dropped off to my house in my car, except the person that was going to follow my car in the DD's car to drive him back isn't in shape to drive either.

It's 2 o'clock in the morning. I call my housemate Chad. Chad's sleeping. He was in the studio all day. I explain to him that I need him to jump in the back seat of my car, ride to the DD's car and drive me back home. Of course Chad says "yes" and comes through like a champ. A champ, I say.

Here's what I want to tell you:

If I, incredibly hot/fugly John Mayer can make that call, so can you.

The distance from the parking lot to my house was about 5 miles, mostly straight shot up the coast of Santa Monica, zero traffic. And I didn't drive it. Me. The guy who gets the VIP velvet rope treatment in life.

Oh, and the call? It's not the coolest you'll ever sound. And the logistics? It's kind of inelegant. You trace the same route twice when all you want to do is fall into bed. But you gotta do it.

This is all coming from a guy who you can be sure would have found a sexier way to get home if there was one available. And there just isn't, especially in LA. (You can be sexy again the next day when you wake up with the rest of your big, beautiful life in front of you.)

I'm not writing this to earn golf claps, it's just that if I'm going to stand in any way as an ambassador of something cool or influential, this is more important than any pair of sneakers or a guitar.

And to give a big high five to the Chads of the world.

See you around

JM

John Mayer has recorded a new song called "Say" for the film The Bucket List starring Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman.

I heard about the video shoot sometime around the end of his summer tour. There have been posts on it on the Mayer fan boards for a few weeks. I've just not bothered to seek it out. I figured it would find me sooner or later and now it has.

PerezHilton posted it today, so here it is: World Premiere!

If you're a John Mayer hater the comments are so rude that, at least, you'll get a kick out of that. There is something for all of us ;)

Damn You, John!

Update: January 4, 2009 @ 12:30pm

Ha! Over a year later, 2 Girls 1 Cup has come back to haunt me. This time, there is nothing gross and no gagging. There is only friendly banter in a FB thread. But that thread gave me this link. (thanks Jeff.)

Check it out:

See what you started Mayer?

Okay, John posted this video yesterday.

2 Guys 1 Cup

It's a parody of a very popular video on the Internet right now. The video he and his buddy Sherrod Small are making fun of is incredibly gross. I'm NOT posting the link. If you really must see it, email me and I'll give you the direct link. The website everyone says go to is buggy to say the least.

However, I will post the challenge and me, being an idiot, doing the challenge just out of sheer morbid curiousity and guilt from laughing at all the other reaction videos I'd watched.

The challenge:

Me meeting and suffering through the challenge:

And, funny me, okay? ;-)

Just to be clear, this is not be reacting to John and Sherrod's parody. This is me reacting to the 2 girls 1 cup video. Two guys eating frozen yogurt from the same cup...strange, maybe, but that's the point of the parody. However, gag reflex inducing, not.

John and Sherrod, see you in February, and I'm going to kick your asses.

Update 1 (Nov. 10, 2007 @11:57am)
Oh, update! Yes, I usually put updates first, but this one I think you have to see only after you're well versed in what this crazy 2 Girls 1 Cup thing is all about.

These two posted a response to John and Sherrod's parody. It's hilarious:

A duet by two of my faves: Alicia Keys and John Mayer

Alicia and John got together and recorded a duet. Maybe one day I'll blog about how I had tickets to the Alicia Keys show when she was playing Seoul and my car gave out on me on the highway. That sucked, but dealing with my car was easy. They're good with that stuff here in Korea.

Anyway, her new album As I Am will be released on November 12th and the PR machine is going strong.

John Mayer Has A TV Show

It's just random and funny shit. Thanks to a friend over at MySpace for sending this out today.

It's the full version of John Mayer Has A TV Show which he made back in 2004. I'm posting it more for me, so that I don't have to search the net when I want to find it. However, enjoy it.

My favorite part are the John Mayer and Trick Daddy interview clips and them running around Nashville ;) My second favorite is the Bear Suit stuff. All of it is funny though.

Live Earth Fall-Out

July 12, 2007 @ 5:07am

Update: Why Live Earth Mattered

Check it out.

--------------------

Okay, now I can't believe this but, um, I straight up forgot about Live Earth.

How, you ask, is this possible?

Well, I can't give you an exact answer, but it's a combination of a few things:

  1. I'm on vacation from work and when that's the case I go into true lazy mode.
  2. I'm all a flutter and distracted (over what? well, maybe I'll tell later...however, probably not.)
  3. Also, I'm just burnt out on the news. That happens because I actually follow the news and sometimes it's just negative information overload. I'm not even tuning into the news the way I usually do because no matter what the story is it seems to be presented with the most negative angle possible. Doom and fucking gloom. I'm really a positive person and I see the world that way the majority of the time. Basically, staying up on current events can be a kill joy and I consciously step back every few weeks just to keep myself on the Pollyanna side of the jaded spetrum. Don't mistake my ability to hack away at an issue with precision as negative or jaded. I'm good at it because analytical.
  4. I've also just been busy. I'm under deadline with my current internship and have another one set up to start in early August.
Basically, I'm busy.

Now if you've clicked around my lovely blog you know I'm a John Mayer fan. I'm new to the fold, but I dig his music. I think it's funny because I guess since he's that "Daughters" guy when I say I like Mayer people have a certain image. Well, I've discussed before, but I wasn't a fan until his John Mayer Trio and Continuum albums (his older stuff is excellent though.) In fact, recently I had a friend send me some news blurb on him about him being chosen as a sexy dude or some shit like that. Okay, cool, but really I could care less.

I'm from L.A. I'm jaded and pretty much not impressed merely because someone is a celebrity. I've met a few. I've gone to school with kids of famous people. I know some second tier celebs and people who work in entertainment doing a range of things. It's a big yawn for me. Celebrities just have a job that puts them in the public eye, but they're normal folks (well, as normal as folks can be in that situation.)

I did let out a scream when I saw him in concert but it was like "wow, I'm in fuckin' Tokyo seeing John Mayer...this is sweet. I'm so cool." I mean the girls I was with started pushing to get up front and I just couldn't join in without a high amount of guilt. That's particularly true because, while I'm not tall, I was taller than a lot of the Japanese women in the crowd. I basically let the the shorter ladies get in front of me because it's crappy having crane your neck to see at a concert and this was a small venue so it's not like letting that little lady get in front of me was going to impact my experience. Plus, I had party boots on, so I was hovering a few inches over my normal height anyway.

So I was a little um...suspicious when my cousin emailed me this: Live Earth: John Mayer Calls For Massaging The Message. Now I knew my man was playing Live Earth in New Jersey and I even considered hoping a plane to Tokyo to check out the Live Earth show there this weekend but decided against it. So I was scared because I'm expecting screeching fans and some concert stupidity. Instead, it was a fairly interesting interview snippet. Check it out.

Now I agree with him that's really easy to get stuck on minute details which deaden the impact of the message. The fact is we're wasteful. I think it's crucial to focus on what you can do in your everyday life. That's not hard. That's things like carrying a small mug instead of consuming coffee in disposable cups (that's easy, I do it, even here.) I know I've been while living here. I've found it harder to be environmentally conscious, and I was that conserve and recycle kid that, of course, went vegitarian in college. In California it's pretty easy to be environmentally mindful. It's encouraged. It's cool. It's even sexy. The system helps you. That's gotta spread so that even when it's not encouraged, cool or sexy you do it.

Here, I walk past stores who have their air con on full blast AND the doors are wide open. It's waste beyond measure and, honestly, it's easy to fall into a pattern of I don't have to do it 'cause that person will. Well, if everyone is thinking that (and you know most are) then guess what? There is a lot of waste. I'm regressing back to being more mindful of how my actions impact the world and I think we all should definitely pay more mind to it because we're trashing our Earth.

For the most part, I think the criticisms of Live Earth are just negative people finding anything to take away from the event. Yes, we know big stars flew to the venues to perform. Yes, we know airplanes are big polluters. However, we also know to get your Average Joe or Jane on board it's going to help if their favorite pop star is on board too. People are followers. This is nothing new. So big celebrities who want to contribute to this are welcome in my book.

This lead me to a criticism that IS germane. I'll post the video. Watch it and what do you think?

I agree with the points made here.

And that does surprise me because most of the time when I hear what PETA is up to I just want to slap some of them around because they're repelling more people than they know with the stunts they pull.

It might be time for more changes than I thought.

Oh thanks to a friend at MySpace looky what was on my bulletin board this morning ;)

Enjoy!

Free Speech: Uh oh, here we go...

John Mayer (right) with John Edwards at the Time Magazine's 100 Most Influential People Gala
Update: June 8, 2007 @ 7:55pm

Speaking up free speech and consequences. Since I mentioned John's blog on Isaiah Washington and the Grey's Anatomy madness, the latest news is Mr. Washington will not be coming back to the show. Here is to PerezHilton because love him or hate him (and I love him) he's great for celebrity news: Fired!
Unfortunately, Mr. Washington decided to release a statement that is far from gracious:
I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore.
Clearly, getting kicked from the cast of a major network's prime time hit hasn't taught him that there really is a time to just shut the hell up.

--------------------------

When I saw the headline that Opie and Andy, XM DJs, had been suspended, I was pretty sure John Mayer would chime in.

Why? Well, it's because I know he likes them. He interviewed with them a few months ago. Also, he's chimed in before when certain personalities have violated some pop culture norm.

However, to John, and everyone else chiming in, this isn't about free speech. I don't have time to get into it in detail right now. I've got a thesis that I should be writing. But, oh, what a good reason to procrastinate and spend my writing energy on pop culture instead! I might discuss it more once my international studies manifesto is complete, but I don't even know what poor Opie and Andy said much less have time to comment at length. If anyone has a transcript, feel free to comment, and share it (with a link, please.)

The furor over the Dixie Chicks was not about free speech. The furor of Isaiah Washington was not about free speech. The furor over Imus was not about free speech. This is not about free speech.

These have all been about the conflict between offensive speech and capitalism. They can say whatever they want. However, the public and sponsors can and will react. The plug, for now, has been pulled on O&A. This all about money. Special interests surely are driving it to some degree, but they scared of losing money due to this either through subscribers or sponsors (not sure how XM radio works, do they even have commericals on XM?)

So here is what John had to say. I do think it's interesting he's come to their defense but when Isaiah Washington had offensive words about gays he wanted to make his character gay and put him on the soundstage with a wild animal. BTW, Washington has already played a gay character (it didn't work...sorry, John.) For what it's worth, however, John didn't argue for Washington being fired or call for him to apologize. Maybe that's what should happen to O&A? A romp in the cage with a polar bear? Be consistent Johnny.

Here is what John had to say:

Freedom of Speech vs. Blackjack Myth or in Defense of O&A
From the book "Blackjack Bluebook II" by Fred Renzey:

"Most serious blackjack players object to the order of the cards being changed only when things are going well. And if they're losing, then they in fact want to change the cards around so as to break the dealer's "hot streak". This suggests that if you're winning, then the following cards in the shoe are stacked in your favor, and shouldn't be tampered with. But in reality, all it means is that the previous cards in the shoe were stacked in your favor.

An enlightening study on just this kind of "streakiness" was reported on in Stanford Wong's highly recommended book, Professional Blackjack. In that experiment, 20 million computer hands were run, recording the win/lose results for the player immediately following two consecutive wins, two consecutive losses and every possible two hand combination of wins, losses and ties. The results?

VIRTUALLY NO DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ANY OF THEM!

The player was no more likely to win his next hand just after having won two in a row, than immediately after losing two in a row. So then, what is there to be preserved in the order of the cards? In that regard, every next hand is a brand new ball game."
____

John here.

In the case of Opie and Anthony, and yes, even Don Imus, they were hired and respected for their ability to stare the dealer in the eye and hit on their 16 against an ace. When they drew a five, they were revered for their gambling acumen. But when they busted, as anyone in the ongoing gamble of speaking freely (now semantically different than "free speech") does from time to time, they were asked to hand in their player's cards and escorted to their vehicles.

I believe that free speech protects not what has already been spoken, but what has yet to be said. Sure, once a sentence is constructed, the words can be determined to be either winning or losing, as are the cards in the discard pile. Except instead of obeying a static, rule, society is left to sift through the played cards and argue what should beat the dealer, when we should have hit and stood, and just what the hell we were doing that night in Vegas in the first place.

It seems to me that in this gamble, we should change either the odds or the payout.

Please feel free to leave your comments in the link not offered below.
The one thing I'll say is this. With the shift in demographics in the US those in the majority (read: whites) are going to have to be more cognizant of those in the minority. The white male is getting hit hardest on this offensive speech issue. I believe that's because they're viewed as the ones benefiting the most from white privilege (or whatever you want to call it.) Even white women don't have as much power or influence as the white male.

I'm not saying ban offensive speech.

I'm saying that like in the past when a black person was scared to say "fuck you" to a white person out of fear of violating the social norms in place at the time (breaking that norm meant a high risk of being beat down or even being lynched - see Robert Axelrod's The Complexity of Cooperation, Chapter four, for a disscussion of lynching and norms). Now those in the majority are going to have to be much more cognizant that there are consequences to mouthing off.

Fair? Hell, yes. Right? Hell, no.

I'm not one to support censorship. Because of my nation's tolerance of speech I'll go as far as to support the right to say whatever you want, offensive or not. However, say it, and realize it just might affect your bottom line if you're in the spotlight.

Oh, and to this guy's quote: XM Radio Hates Free Speech

Al Sharpton and all the rest of the nappy-headed whiners don’t listen to O&A (or Imus for that matter) and wouldn’t know that a homeless guy wants a go at Condolezza or that a sixty-something old man knows the latest lingo. It’s time for corporate america to tell these special interest whiners where to stuff it.

I have nappy hair. However, I'm not a special interest whiner and I really don't care what O&A said.

I'm no fan of Condolezza, but joking about rape? That makes me very uncomfortable. However, you'd be surprised who is listening to O&A. I noticed they make a few Asian jokes too. That irks me, but I know they're paid to be shocking and XM brags about how uncensored they are...,well, were.

Now my 참치초밥 세트 (tuna sushi dinner set) has arrived. It's time to eat and get back to work on my thesis.

"I may disagree with what you have to say, but I shall defend, to the death, your right to say it." - Francois Marie Arouet Voltaire, The Friends of Voltaire (1907), French philosopher and writer (1694-1778) (Did he really say this? It's explained: here.)

What did I say? For better or for worse, depending on your perspective, that's capitalism at work, baby!

Mayer's O and A interview on Youtube.

*I think John mentions Ms. Simpson in this interview...rarely are things coincidences...rarely. However, I'm not the guy's publicist, so it might have been another interview. I just remember putting it together when the rumor broke and having some Mayer fans way upset. However, the new buzz is das ist kaputt: Jessica: Unlucky In Love. So maybe some fans will snap out of their "hatin' on John Mayer" funk now. I, however, believe that they were never fans.

Reveal Your Blog Crush

I'm TOTALLY late in the game here. I think that's because during the due date of this I was committed to doing nothing, reading nothing and thinking about nothing.

I've recovered. I know my grades (two As, bitches - can you believe I want one to be adjusted up? I'm such a perfectionist). I'm ready to carry on with life. So while delaying my departure to a Christmas day potluck gathering, I found this:

Reveal Your Blog Crush: Dec. 15th

I've heard the rumble regarding this fabulous brainchild Sandra and I had last week. Ok, so you want to REVEAL YOUR BLOG CRUSH but you've got questions. Hey, we're here to make your reveal the least like a junior high flashback, ok? Let's proceed. . .

So, I've been asked what technically IS a Blog Crush? It'd likely include some, if not all, of the following:
A) You can't wait to read what they post next.
B) You want to be friends with them.
C) You think they are the cat's meow. Meow!
D) You might find them attractive- physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually, whatever floats your boat.
E) If you met them in person, blushing might occur.

If you have to really think hard about who your blog crush is, you probably don't have one.

THE RULES:
1) You can have more than one crush (but please refrain from naming your entire blogroll in an effort to keep everyone happy).
2) You must reveal it on December 15, 2006 on your own blog.
3) Boys can crush on boys. Girls can crush on girls. Boys can crush on girls. Girls can crush on boys. This has little to do with our sexuality and more to do with being bloggeriffic.

We'd love to know if you are participating so leave Sandra or I a comment on our blogs.

I don't quite get the point of the deadline, but I'm so late in the game that by definition I've broken the deadline rule, so it doesn't matter anyway.

I've chosen a four of blogcrushes simply because I think these guys are so cute in their own special ways.
  1. John Mayer - Not the blog on his website but the one on Honeyee.com. It's funny, but shows his watch and electronic gadget dork side, and that's very cute. I've always had a weakness for technical and more cerebral than physical guys.
    • Plus, he always seems to have photos of black people on his blog! People like David Ryan Harris who is an amazing musician who toured with John on his fall tour. BTW, I met and talked with David briefly in Tokyo. He's a nice fellow.
      • John also has a blog about his trainer's holiday brunch. The picture is him, Harley (his trainer), Alicia Keys, and a few other of my people. He's also blogged about the weird, but very funny, Tracy Morgan. There are other pictures, but it would be beyond lame to account for every single one. It's just nice to see. That's all.
    • He's got a new puppy and the dog has made it to the blog a couple of times too. That's just cute.
    • Also, since Honeyee.com is a website based in Japan, it's on GMT +9 time which is also Seoul's time zone. It's fun to see that he was blogging just as I was rolling out of bed or something equally uneventful and boring.
  2. The Anonymous Coworker - He's hilarious. When I first started reading his blog subtitle was "Is Wayne Brady gonna have to choke a bitch?" That's from the Dave Chappelle Show, Season Two, in the episode where Wayne Brady takes over the show. (From the skit that spoofs Wanye Brady's clean cut image). This crush reveals another weakness: a guy that has me guffawing laughing and this blog does it very well.
  3. Citizen of the Month - Neil is a another hilarious blogger and he's blogging from home sweet home, Southern California. When I read his blog I can't help but burst out laughing. I also usually leave a comment or two (I've not done so lately because I've been busy and brain dead.) One of the funniest blogs I read was about mommy bloggers.
  4. Anderson Cooper's 360 blog - Honestly, he doesn't seem to contribute much to this blog, but who cares? I mean he's a busy, award-winning reporter! The rest of the CNN reporters and staff can write for him! I've had a crush on Anderson Cooper since his World News Now days. I was in law school, and staying up late was something that was pretty much required if you wanted to keep up with all the reading. World News Now was a funny late night news show on that mad me laugh, so I was a regular viewer. This is only a continuation of that TV crush.
Okay, those are four of my blog crushes. I actually have more but I have to stop because I've successfully procrastinated and now I'm really late!

Again, Merry Christmas!

John Mayer on Oprah

I'm posting this for those of you who don't live in the States and can't watch Oprah. Of course, it will also come in handy for those of you who missed it wherever you might be or for those of you who have an unstable obsession with John Mayer.

He was on her show today and his industrious fans have already managed to get it uploaded to the net. I'm lucky as the show does air here, so I got to zip home from work and watch the broadcast. In fact, now that it's over I'm heading out for a pint or two of beer and dinner.

Anyway, he was also blogging from Oprah's very beige greenroom. You can look at those here. It's in reverse chronological order. In case you're not familiar with blogging:

  1. Oprah Live
  2. Blogs Need Pictures
  3. The Throw
  4. Success
I'm definitely a teacher. ;-)

I'll keep this short and sweet my dears. Thanks to ZenChick on MySpace for getting these up.

Enjoy!

In Spite of the Expense, Tokyo is One Fun City

This is my second trip to Tokyo and my sixth or seventh one to Japan. I flew over yesterday to see John Mayer in concert at Yebisu Garden Hall. And, yes, in spite of the expense of Tokyo (not the show), it was worth it. I went to a good show, met some fun people and am on a much needed weekend vacation.

My boy looked tired, but it was the last night of a tour that he's been on since August. He played and performed well. He also engaged the crowd, and that is always fun. The venue was small, so unlike home in the States where Mayer plays these huge venues, relatively speaking, everyone was up close. Honestly, I don't think I'd bother with going to a concert of his in the States. I'm just thinking it would be mayhem with all the rabid fans. It was bad enough last night when he tossed some guitar picks into the crowd. It was like he was tossing bread to the starving. At the concert I met one girl who was just intent on meeting him. As it makes for good story telling and funny photo ops, I chose to hang with her after the show. It was fun to trail someone else around and let them make all the decisions. Yes, I've got a funny 'Friday night in Tokyo' story. Eventually, she gave up and we met up with a guy we'd met at the show. She left early, but I ended up staying out drinking and talking until about 4am.

Today's plan was to take advantage of free admission through someone else I met to Tokyo Disneyland, but I woke up to pouring rain. That was good as the plan was to get to Disneyland early, so I got some well-needed sleep. I spent the day exploring Shibuya and wandering around my favorite area of Tokyo, Harajuku. I fell in love with the district the first time I visited Tokyo because it's the fast track to a shopping orgasm. As I've not had time to follow fashion and what the designers are putting out there, I was happy to see that my accessories (Ugg boots and dangling fur ball earrings) were all the rage in some of the Harajuku stores I visited. That helped my fashion esteem because with my schedule my uniform has been a supply of athletic pants, Converse All Stars, and baggy t-shirts. It's a more of a haggard student look than fashion forward look. I upped my clothes a notch this weekend and dusted off the accessories I'd been not bothering with because, if anything, the Japanese love their fashion and I wanted to match.

I've got one more day here, and I'll fly back to Seoul tomorrow. I'm telling you, if you ever get the chance to come to Tokyo, do it. It's huge, overwhelming, easy to get lost in (and I tend not to get lost), but it's worth every moment of madness because it's a great city with some interesting people.

Over and out...it's time to hit one of the 100 yen stores and then figure out what I'll have for dinner.

Bear Suits - John Mayer and The Chad

People are just silly. That's good because laughing is fun.

You see, John Mayer has a wicked sense of humor. On his short-lived show on VH1 aptly named "John Mayer Has a TV Show" there is a piece that shows him wandering around the parking lot dressed in a bear suit harassing his fans waiting to see his show. It's hilarious.

What's funny is The Chad didn't know about this. His producers then sent him to a John Mayer concert with a bear suit. It's pretty funny.

Enjoy!
